Eurotrip
Our trip, the abridged version. Photos to come when we fix our other computer which died upon our return to Eindhoven.
Lucerne, Switzerland: the two boys who'd abandoned their bikes in the still of the night to play cards while we watched their silhouettes in front of the lights of Lucerne city dancing over the lake of the same name, the Chapel Bridge, creamy capuccinos
Grindelwald, Switzerland: the evil stench we thought was a combination of the wind changing and cows, but was actually our dinner-neighbours' fondue, imagining Heidi and Peter would poke their heads into the corner of our postcard view, bells with sheep tied to them, Edwin's new cap, a treacherous drive through a mountain pass
Bellinzona, Switzerland: surviving the San Gottardo tunnel, missing out on the famed 3 UNESCO world heritage castles - finding out too late they were there to visit, but using the city as a place to get some sleep, starting to test our italian
Lago Maggiore, Italy: Cheap pasta and coffee at Bar Clipper, Arcademia della spettacola with its dreadful performances in people clad in all white, Out of Africa screening in our camper during an afternoon sunshower, little girl being gently supervised by her father at the water's edge, another new hat for Edwin, this time a black fedora-esque number
Florence, Italy: The Davids, Santa Maria cathedral, Santa Croce, Il Ponte Vecchio, the crowds, my bad italian, a terrifying bike-ride into town, discussing "Buffy" with Mara and Miriam at the campsite bar during a stop off on their train trip through Italy, Borga Antica and its 700g 7 cm thick florentine beef steak, making friends with Wesley and Su in the Uffizi gallery queue
Pisa, Italy: bumping into Wesley and Su in another queue near the leaning tower, driving in circles to get back onto the highway
Lago del Torre Puccini, Italy: the campsite pool requiring payment for entry and the purchase and wearing of a swimming cap each - with no places in the sun, our Euro 8 visit lasted 4 minutes. A day off involving finally using our bikes productively for transport to a day at the beach, sweltering under a rented umbrella and then doing absolutely nothing
Santa Margherita, Italy: taking a dip in the Ligurian sea with ancient nonnas at 9am. "Buongiorna Giuliana, Buongiorna Diana ...", Nonna Maria's groovy floral bathing cap and slippers to match, my two new dresses
Portofino, Italy: paying about Euros 20 for all sorts of parking spots only to find nowhere to swim, exuding a calmness as though we were extras from The Talented Mr Ripley when charged Euros 15 for one OJ and one toastie
Rapallo, Italy: going out for dinner and enjoying the DJ setting up at the cheap and cheerful (but nasty) eatery in town, Rita and Rosa the waitress twins, meeting the italian mechanic and describing our problem in dutchy/aussie italo-english when our back door wouldn't open anymore (thereby possibly restricting our breathing during the 29 degree evenings which were even hotter in our tin can home)
Lago di Piano, Italy: relaxing lakeside, baby ducks, baby swans, hiking to a little church with a skull display, the roof of Italy at Sighignola, Strangers on a Train stopping 1/2 way through, yet another hat for Edwin
Bern, Switzerland: Rösti, raclette, Einstein's house, the Paul Klee Centrum and seeing the spot that used to exhibit the massive inflated dog poo by Paul McCarthy that blew away earlier in the summer, cycling into town and enjoying wonderful weather, terrible rain, clear blue and wild river water
Triberg (the Black Forest), Germany: being frightened of the 45 degree incline on the way into town and back, the highest waterfall in Germany, squirrels, woodpeckers, cuckoo-clock chain stores
Lucerne, Switzerland: the two boys who'd abandoned their bikes in the still of the night to play cards while we watched their silhouettes in front of the lights of Lucerne city dancing over the lake of the same name, the Chapel Bridge, creamy capuccinos
