Week 2: Things (part 2)

20 - 27 July: Austria
The Italians always bring a bathrobe to a campsite. I mean, why not? Why not walk to the showerblock in your bathrobe with your towel slung around your neck and your soap in your pocket? It’s very efficiënt, and you’re dry and warm after your shower. The others of us struggle with clothes, towels and toiletry bags. Siamo pazzo!
When we decided to take the bikes with us on this trip, I though, man, what a pain it’s going to be, rigging them up and taking them down before and after every drive. But they’ve been brilliant. Not only have they allowed us to have excellent tours through Salzburg so far, we have been able to use them as real transport. Today when we had to take a bus up the steep part of the Kielstein road (Hitler´s holiday home), the car park was 800m or more from the busstop. It was midday and it was 30 degrees celsius. So we took our bikes, whizzed down the mountain pass to the busstop and took our tour. On the way home, the ride uphill wasn´t so bad, as we overtook all our exhausted fellow tour members. Thanks Jan and Gerrie, these bikes are awesome, and justifies any excuse to eat pancakes stuffed with icecream balls and covered in chocolate sauce!
